Agent setup prompt
These are Autolane’s instructions for adding Autolane Courier to an AI agent. If a person asked you to follow this page, you are that agent. Run each step yourself. Hand over to the person only where a step says so: linking their phone needs them.
Autolane Courier is an MCP server. It lets an agent hand a food order from an Austin restaurant to an Autolane vehicle, which collects the order at the store and delivers it. Its address is:
If you read this page as markdown, it may start with a note about a documentation MCP server whose address ends in /_mcp/server. That server searches Autolane’s docs. It is not Autolane Courier, so don’t add it.
1. Find your section
- You are claude.ai, Claude Desktop, the Claude phone apps, ChatGPT or Muse: go to step 4, even if you can run shell commands.
- Otherwise, if you can run shell commands on the person’s computer (Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, Hermes or another terminal agent): go to step 2.
2. Terminal agents
First decide whether this computer can open a browser for the person. It can’t if the person reaches this computer over SSH (SSH_CONNECTION is set), if you are running in a container (/.dockerenv or /run/.containerenv exists), or if it is a Linux server with no display (neither DISPLAY nor WAYLAND_DISPLAY is set). If it can’t, or if you can’t sign in to an MCP server with OAuth, go to step 3 instead.
Some login commands below wait until the person finishes in the browser, and print a link you need to show them while they wait. Run those in the background so you can read what they print, and don’t stop them until linking ends. If you can’t run commands in the background, ask the person to run the command in their own terminal on this computer.
Claude Code
-
Add the server:
-
Ask the person to link their phone: run
/mcp, pickautolane-courierand select Authenticate. If/mcpdoesn’t list it, ask them to run! claude mcp login autolane-courierinstead. Step 5 tells them what they will see. -
Check it:
It should say Connected.
Codex
-
Add the server:
It waits while Codex opens the person’s browser at the Autolane page, so run it in the background.
-
If the browser doesn’t open, run
codex mcp login autolane-courierin the background. Step 5 tells the person what they will see. -
Check it with
codex mcp list. Its Auth column forautolane-couriershould sayOAuth. Not logged inmeans the person hasn’t finished linking.
OpenClaw
OpenClaw refuses mcp add and mcp login while its Gateway runs. Never stop the Gateway yourself: if you answer through it, that ends this chat and leaves the Gateway off. If step 1 refuses for that reason, ask the person, in one message, to run these in a terminal on the computer where OpenClaw runs: openclaw gateway stop, then steps 1 and 2, then openclaw gateway start. Send them https://docs.goautolane.com/courier/install/openclaw for what they will see. Step 3 works once the Gateway is back.
-
Add the server. Keep
--transport streamable-http; without it OpenClaw tries a connection type Autolane doesn’t offer. -
Run
openclaw mcp login autolane-courierin the background and give the person the link it prints. Step 5 tells them what they will see. -
Check it with
openclaw mcp status --verbose.
Hermes
-
Ask the person to add this entry in the custom MCP section of Hermes:
-
Hermes doesn’t connect straight away. Ask the person to open the MCP config for Courier by Autolane and select Retry, then Authorize. Step 5 tells them what they will see.
-
Ask the person whether Hermes shows Courier by Autolane as connected.
Any other terminal agent
Add https://mcp.goautolane.com/courier-mcp as a streamable HTTP MCP server that signs in with OAuth, then start its login. Step 5 tells the person what they will see.
When the person has linked their phone, go to step 6.
3. Terminal agents on a computer with no browser
Use Autolane’s local MCP server package. It needs Node.js 20 or later.
-
Start this in the background so you can read what it prints while it waits (up to 10 minutes). If you can’t run commands in the background, ask the person to run it in their own terminal on this computer and show you what it prints:
-
It prints a link and a code. Show both to the person. They open the link on any device (their phone works), check that the page shows the same code, and link their phone. The command ends with “Linked. Your agent can use Autolane Courier now.” If the page says “Autolane Courier isn’t available for this number yet.”, stop the command and follow the waitlist note in step 5.
-
Add the package to your agent as a local (stdio) MCP server:
-
Claude Code:
-
Codex:
-
Hermes: ask the person to add this entry in the custom MCP section:
-
Any other agent: a local MCP server with the command
npxand the arguments-y @autolane/courier-mcp.
-
-
Check it with
npx -y @autolane/courier-mcp status. It should sayLinked to https://mcp.goautolane.com/courier-mcp.
Then go to step 6.
4. Chat apps
Whichever app you are, step 5 tells the person what they will see when they link their phone. Then go to step 6.
Muse
Connect the Autolane Courier MCP at https://mcp.goautolane.com/courier-mcp. Show the person the link and code you get. They open the link, check that the code matches, and link their phone.
claude.ai, Claude Desktop and the Claude phone apps
You can’t add a connector yourself. Give the person these steps:
- Open claude.ai/customize/connectors, or in Claude Desktop select Customize, then Connectors.
- Select + Add, then Add custom connector. Name:
Autolane Courier. URL:https://mcp.goautolane.com/courier-mcp. Select Add. If Claude asks how to identify itself, choose Register automatically. - Select Connect and link your phone.
- In a chat, select +, then Connectors, and turn on Autolane Courier.
The full guide is at https://docs.goautolane.com/courier/install/claude.
ChatGPT
You can’t add a server yourself. Give the person these steps:
- Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server.
- Name:
Autolane Courier. Server URL:https://mcp.goautolane.com/courier-mcp. Authentication: OAuth, with the client ID and secret left empty. Accept the note about custom servers and create it. - Select Connect and link your phone.
- In a chat, pick Autolane Courier with @ or +.
The full guide is at https://docs.goautolane.com/courier/install/chatgpt.
5. Linking the phone
Tell the person what to expect:
- An Autolane page called “Link your phone”. They enter their mobile number.
- Autolane texts them a 6-digit code. They enter it.
- Some agents then get a page that asks where the agent is running, for example “Where is Claude Code running?”:
- On this computer: they select Finish linking.
- On another computer: the page shows a link. Ask them to paste it to you. If your login command is asking for a link, give it that link. Otherwise check the link before you run anything. It must start with
http://localhost,http://127.0.0.1orhttp://[::1], followed straight away by:(the port) or/. After that it may contain only letters, digits and-._~/%?=&+*:, with no spaces, quote marks,$, backticks,;,|,@or line breaks. If it fails, don’t run it; ask the person to copy it again from the Autolane page. If it passes, runcurl '<link>'on this computer. The link works once, within 5 minutes.
If the page says “Autolane Courier isn’t available for this number yet.”, their number isn’t on the invite list. Tell them to join the waitlist at https://goautolane.com/autolane-courier, and stop.
6. Finish
-
Run the check for your agent above. A chat app asks the person whether Autolane Courier shows as connected.
-
If your agent loads MCP tools only when a session starts, tell the person to start a new session.
-
Tell the person:
Autolane Courier is set up. Ask me for food from an Austin restaurant and I’ll have an Autolane vehicle deliver it. For example: “Order a breakfast taco plate from a taco shop on South Congress for pickup, and have Autolane deliver it to 500 W 2nd St.”
Good to know
- Autolane delivers in Austin from 6:30 AM to 10 PM (store time), for orders up to 90 minutes ahead.
- It collects from restaurants, cafes, bakeries and other prepared-food stores that offer pickup, not from grocery stores, pharmacies or bars.
- It can’t carry alcohol, tobacco, vapes or anything that needs an ID check at pickup.
- The delivery fee is $1.99, paid with a secure Stripe link. The person pays the restaurant for the food as usual.
- Autolane Courier is invite-only for now.
